What are the types of treatment for diabetes?
The major goal in treating diabetes is to minimize any increase of blood sugar (glucose) without causing abnormally reduced levels of blood sugar.
Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, exercise, and a diabetic diet.
Type 2 diabetes is treated first with weight management, a diabetic diet, and exercise. Oral medications can also be used to complement the measures to control the patient’s weight or increased blood sugar levels. When all these fail as effective treatment, insulin is considered.
