Diabetes
What is diabetes
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the patient has impaired effectiveness in utilizing digested food for daily energy use or growth.
Glucose is formed when food is broken down (digested) and is the main source of energy for the body. As glucose passes through the blood, insulin will be available to regulate the rate at which the body cells take up the glucose.
In diabetic patients, this process is hindered either because the pancreas produces little or no insulin, or because the cells have become insensitive to insulin.
The level of glucose in the blood increases, and passes out of the body in the urine. Thus the body cells are unable to absorb glucose even though the blood contains a large amount.
